Along the length of Lewis  nestled along the rugged coastline is a landscape that is well worth exploring. The beaches are long golden sands and birdwatchers are in their element watching all the different seabirds that flock upon the shores. High cliffs can take you to eye level of  circling  Kittiwakes and fulmars, but beware of the birds in nesting season as they will screech and dive bomb in deterring you from their nest grounds. Some of the beaches stretch as far as the eye can see, others are hidden in small bays.

Many of the bays are ideal for swimming, snorkling and surfing. A wet suit is advisable as even in the height of summer the Atlantic Ocean is cold! Do watch out for dolphins, seals and migrating sharks.

Also be aware that some inlets have strong under currents so look for notices.

If it is solitude you need there are many glorious beaches where you will be unlikely to meet another person, even on a sunny day in high summer!
